Re: Unjust Sanctions against Eritrea - Resolution 1907 (2009)
I am writing to you as your constituent, and a member of the British-Eritrean community, to bring to your attention an unjust action taken by the UN Security Council in passing Resolution 1907 (2009), on 23 December 2009, which imposed sanctions against Eritrea.
This resolution was based on false information, which purported that Eritrea was supporting and arming Somali insurgents. Despite the lack of evidence, the British government has taken the misguided decision to support these sanctions against Eritrea.
I, like many British-Eritreans, am disturbed at these sanctions to be imposed on a country and people still recovering from decades of war, and worried about the likely impact on the great inroads into development of the country which has taken place since 1991.
The way this resolution was passed goes against a very important legal principle; that of the presumption of innocence until proven guilty. The fact that it was passed without any evidence is a very dangerous precedent, and echoes the scenario with Iraq where steps were taken following false information - namely the so-called “dodgy dossier”, the effects of which we are still witnessing. Britain is about to get involved in yet another devastating action against another country without cause.
These sanctions will harm the ordinary people of Eritrea and will hamper peace and stability in the region.
I urge you to represent my concerns in Parliament and push for these sanctions to be repealed.
Yours sincerely
