Dear

You may be aware that the UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on Eritrea which includes arms embargo, travel restrictions and asset freeze on the allegation that Eritrea has provided financial and logistical support to Somali insurgents and in relations to its conflict with Djibouti.

The sanction was imposed on my country of origin with active support by Britain. No shred of credible evidence was presented to justify the sanction and whatever evidences were put forward in the past were proved to be fabricated. Ironically, the British government informed our community leaders that the evidence it has is classified and cannot be made public.

Eritrea is a country that has been bruised and abused by the major powers for decades. It is disheartening to note that the injustice perpetuated against the people of Eritrea is being repeated in this day and age.

There is no doubt the peace is the prerequisite for sustainable development. If the British government had any wish to see peace reign in the area, it would have requested for the Ethiopian government to comply with the rulings of international court and withdraw from Eritrea’s sovereign territory. To the contrary, The British government has been giving Ethiopia the moral and material support in the face of its intransigence. The policy of favouring one at the expense of the other has led to the devastation and human suffering that we have been witnessing over the last decade.

Invasion of Somalia by Ethiopia with the support of the USA led to what the UN described as the worst humanitarian disaster. The sanction on Eritrea is not going to solve the crises in Somalia or the region as a whole. It will make the situation in the region worse for a simple reason that it is neither just nor address the essence of the problem. This wrong must be righted to prevent further suffering and bloodshed.

The British government should either table the evidence or take measures to lift the sanctions. I write to you with a hope that you will be able to approach the relevant authority and find out the logic behind what appears to be unjust policy.
